What is bioprotection?

Bioprotection is the use of products that originate from nature to control pests and diseases. At CABI BioProtection Portal, we put bioprotectants into two categories: biopesticides (microbials, semiochemicals, and natural substances) and invertebrate biocontrol agents (macrobials).

How the Portal helped Indian farmers

In India, many smallholder chilli farmers faced ongoing pest problems and rising costs despite using chemical pesticides. With support from the Centre for Sustainable Agriculture (CSA), they began using the CABI BioProtection Portal to find locally registered biocontrol products directly from their mobile phones.

This gave them:

By adopting bioprotection, farmers saw significant improvements, one chilli grower increased her harvest from 20 to over 70 bags while reducing chemical pesticide use, costs, and environmental impact.
